Canadian multiculturalism is working?
Note: this is based on 2016 data and is also an opinion piece in 2016.
People argue that Canada is the most multicultural country in the world. But is it? Is it multicultural? Is Canadian multiculturalism working? Well somewhat. There are hundreds of cultures all over Canada but it’s not spread out.
We as Torontonians, get to see the multiculturalism in this city. This is the same thing with Vancouver and Montreal. These cities are highly multicultural and that is a good thing. Where everyone no matter of race, colour, religion, culture, ethnicity, etc… can work together and prosper. Fewer hate crimes, racism, and sexism are occurring in these cities. This allows these cities to grow and build more quickly than other cities in Canada. Allowing to bring in more tourists, immigrants, refugees, etc… to feel at home when they are not home. Looking at the census of Toronto from Stats Canada in 2016.
Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal are the main cities or the most known cities in Canada. But let’s look at other cities and communities outside the top three. Let’s take the example of the city of Petersburg (which is west of Toronto and near Kitchener). You can disagree, but when I travelled there, all I saw were only “white” people. Well once and a long while you might see a mix of colours. But overall, it’s only white. According to Stats Canada in Ontario out of 13,242,160 people. 8,151,470 are European origin in 2016. These smaller cities in Canada are more isolated from other cultures and clearly show the lack of multiculturalism in parts of Canada.
If we want Canada to be multicultural. We got to spread Canadian multiculturalism outside of Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Instead of making these cities more and more multicultural. We got to spread out the culture around Canada. We need cultures to move out of these cities to be more isolated to bring attraction and promote multiculturalism.
